Using the Measurement Tools
Measurements are performerd by "pointing and clicking on the image. The measurement tools are located on the left toolbar of each image.
The basic steps involved in taking manual measurements are:
Select the appropriate tool in the Toolbar, depending on which measurement. you need to take (polygon, segment, area, etc.).
Each tool has its own way of obtaining a measurement. See How the different measurement tools work below for instructions about the process for each different tool.
When you take a measurement, it appears on the image along with its label, and also is automatically recorded in the Measurements Panel, which is placed on the right side (the Measurements Panel may be shown or hidden by clicking the View-> Measurements Panel menu).
You may want to set the Conversion Factor before taking any measurements.
How the different measurement tools work
The Selection Tool
The Selection Tool is not a Measurement Tool, but it is used to select and modify measurements.
The Line Tool
The Line Tool inserts a control point with each click. Hence, two clicks are required to measure a line. Line Measurements can be selected either with the Selection Tool or by clicking on them on the Measurements Panel. Press Shift do draw a perfectly horizontal or vertical line. After a Line Measurement is selected, any of its control points can be moved with the mouse (click and drag), to change the line start and end points position and recalculate its length.
The Angle Tool
The Angle Tool inserts a control point with each click. Three clicks are required to measure an angle. Angle measurementes can be selected in the same way that Line Measurements.
The Polygon Tool
The Polygon Tool inserts a control point with each click. To set the last control point double-click. To close the polygon, double-click on the first control point. If the polygon is not closed, only its length will be measurement, otherwise its area will be measured as well. A Polygon Measurement also can be closed by selecting it, opening the contextual menu and selecting the Close Polygon menu command. Polygon measurementes can be selected in the same way that Line Measurements. To delete a point, press the Control key and click on it. To insert a new control point between other two points, Shift-Click on the line connecting the two points.
The Arc Tool
The Arc Tool inserts a control point with each click. Three clicks are required to measure an arc. To select an Arc Measurement either click on its center with the Selection Tool or select it on the Measurements Panel. After it is selected, the Arc control points can be moved in the same way than the Angle Tool.
The Counter Tool
The Counter tool insert a single control point with each click. Each new click with add a new counter. By default all Counters are asigned to the same Series number (which is 1). If you need to place counters belonging to different series in the image, click on the Measurements->Set Counter Series # menu.
The Free Form Tool
The Free Form Tool draws a line following the mouse movements, until the mouse button is released. Then asks if you want to close the shape. If you want to measure an area you should close the shape, otherwise only length will be measured. Free Form Tool measurements can be closed, selected, and edited in the same way than Poylgon Measurements.
The Ellipse Tool
To measure an ellipse click and drag the mouse it to draw the ellipse. Press Shift to draw a perfect circle. When the mouse button is realeased the measurement will be done. To select an ellipse click over its label or near its center, or select it in the Measurements Panel. After an Ellipse Measurement is selected, its control points can be moved. Ellipses can be rotated by clicking and dragging the control point that is connected to the ellipse center with a line.
The Magic Wand Tool
The Magic Wand Tool is intended to measures areas with a similar color. When it is select a slim toolbar will appear on top of the image. From that toolbar you can select the Magic Wand tolerance using the left slider, or write an specific tolerance value in the edit box next to the slider (between 0 and 255). The next button to the right , inverts the selection. The next slider adjusts the Magic Wand mask transparency. The Magic Wand color can be changed by clicking the color spor on the right of the toolbar. To select a Magic Wand Tool measurement, click on it in the Measurement Panel. After selected, its color, tolerance and transparency can be modified.
The Selection Brush Tool
The Selection Brush Tool is used to paint a mask over the image and measure the area it cover. When this tool is selected a toolbar will appear on top of the image. From that toolbar you can select the Selection Brush size by using the left slider, or write an specific size value in the edit box next to the slider (between 1 and 860), the brush size will be shown on the left as a white circle. The next button to the right , makes the Selection Brush to erase the mask instead painting. . The Selection color can be changed by clicking the color spor to the right. On the rightmost point of of the toolbar there the "New" button will be. To select a Selection Brush measurement, click on it in the Measurement Panel. After selected, it can be edited at will.
