Adjustment Toolbar

The Adjustment Toolbar only can be used on grayscale or true color (24 BPP) images.

The Adjustment Toolbar can be shown/hidden by using the View > Adjustment Toolbar menu command.

The Adjustment Toolbar has two tabs:

  1. B C G: To adjust Brightness, Contrast and Gamma.

  2. Clear background: Used to clear backgrounds that are not perfectly white.

1. B C G Tab

The B C G tab is shown below:

When the Brightness, Contrast, Gamma sliders are dragged the image display will be adjusted automatically.

The image itself will not be modified until the Apply or the Repeat button are pressed.

Note: If Auto Apply when saving is selected, when saving images using any of the Save buttons in the Edit Tab, the selected values will be automatically applied before saving the image.

The Brightness/Contrast sliders lets you make simple adjustments to the tonal range of an image. The default value both controls is 0 (no change).

The gamma slider determines how light or dark an image appears. Its default value is 1.00 (no change).

When an image has a noisy background, most times, by adjusting the gamma and contrast it can be corrected easily.

Example:

The above image has low contrast and the background is gray instead white.

After adjusting the Contrast (10),Brightness (19) and Gamma (2.40) values, the image improves substantially:

Apply button

As its name indicates, this button applies the adjustments to the image. It will be enabled only after the sliders are moved and after it is clicked the sliders will fall back to their default positions and the button will get disabled until you drawn the sliders again.

Reset button

Only works before clicking the Apply button. It restarts the sliders to their default positions.

Repeat button

Applies again the last adjustments settings to the image.

Select button

Opens a list showing the last 8 adjustment settings applied to the image. By selecting one of the settings in the list, the adjustment sliders will be automatically positioned following that setting and the image display will be adjusted accordingly. This button does not modify the image. It is required to click Apply to do that.

Note: If Auto Apply when saving is selected, when saving images using any of the Save buttons in the Edit Tab, the selected values will be automatically applied before saving the image.

This adjustment can be also applied to Batch Conversions.

2. Clear background Tab

The second tab in the Adjustment Toolbar is for clearing the image background.

Although most books have a white background, when scanning them as grayscale or color images, the image background will not be perfectly white, but will show some grain.

Select Enable Preview to turn ON background clearing.

By moving the range bar to the left the background threshold point will be adjusted and all pixels in the image brighter than the selected threshold will become white.

Note: The image will be modified only when the Apply button is clicked or, if Auto Play when saving is selected, when saving images using any of the Save buttons in the Edit Tab, the selected values will be automatically applied before saving the image.

When moving the mouse cursor over the image background, BSP will show the current background pixel brightness value in the tab.

This adjustment can be also applied to Batch Conversions.
