Overview

Currently (February 2018), Proton VPN doesn't provide a client to run it easily under Linux. This app provides a GUI app to use Proton VPN under Linux easily.

This app is open source. On the bottom of this page you will find the download links to get either the app (binary) or the source code.

Notice: I made this app for my family use. It is a basic app, but I hope people will find it serviceable.

Proton VPN Helper

Usage (configure this app before using it)

To connect to a Proton VPN Server, select the script for the desired server on the left pane, that will copy the script name to the clipboard.

Click on the Terminal button, paste the clipboard contents on the terminal console that will appear.

When asked for the User Name and Password, click on the buttons with those names to copy each one of them to the clipboard, and paste each one of them on the terminal console.

Keep open that terminal console, so you can disconnect easily with Ctrl-C. If the terminal console is closed, use this command to close the VPN connection: sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn stop

Configuration

Create a file named config.ini in this app path.

Put the terminal name in the first line.

Example:

xfce4-terminal
mate-terminal
kterminal
lxterminal

gnome-terminal

In the next two lines put the Proton VPN User Name and Password.

Copy the ProtonVPN configuration files (*.ovpn) in three different folders, inside the app path (its names are self-explanatory):

country
secure
server

Before using Proton VPN you may need to install these dependencies (the code examples are for Ubuntu, Debian derivatives, other distros may need different commands):

sudo apt-get install openvpn
sudo apt-get install openresolv
